Discussion Group, Listserv, Listserve.
Different names for the same thing.
This type of mailing list provides an easy way for a group of people to share information with each other.
They are typically organized around a narrow subject matter, that all subscribers are interested in.
Any subscriber can post a message, which all subscribers will receive.
Most discussion groups are relatively small, as a list with too many messages, or
covering too broad a topic will cause members to leave. Several hundred list members seems to be
an upper limit in many cases.
The web archive and search engine option can provide a valuable resource by allowing
a collection of the list's wisdom to be saved and easily accessed.
Discussion groups are used to facilitate communication for
medical support groups, internet standards working groups, neighborhood civic associations,
virtual meetings for small groups and committees, and alumni organizations,
as well as hobbies and shared interests such as pets, sports, gardening, etc.
