Do It Yourself Mail-list

You can run a mailing list using most any email reader. The secret is to use the BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) field, and put all of the list subscriber's email addresses in that field.

Send the message from your email address, to your email address, and put everybody else's email address in the BCC field.

Each email address listed in the BCC field will receive a copy of your message, yet nobody will see any other subscriber's email address.

If you are using the AOL email reader, put all of the addresses in the Copy To field, and put parenthesis around all the addresses. That is how AOL implements the blind carbon copy feature.

In some email readers, you can setup Nicknames, and have several email addresses associated with a Nickname. If you do this, put the Nickname in the BCC field.

This method works well for Announcement Lists with small numbers of subscribers. As the number of subscribers gets larger, several problems start cropping up.

For starters, it takes time to maintain the list of subscribers, as people ask to join, ask to leave, or want their email address changed.

At some point in time, the number of subscribers can exceed the capacity of the Nickname feature or the size of the BCC field in your email reader.

And the other limitation is that your ISP may not appreciate all the bandwidth used to send out your message to all of your subscribers.

A mailing list service allows you to send one copy of your message to their computer, and it's their bandwidth that is then used to send your message to all of your subscribers.

A mailing list service allows your subscribers to join the list, leave the list, and change their email address by themselves.
